What Can I Do?

Although I'm no longer a resident I am, and always will be, a New Yorker.  And as Hurricane Sandy ripped through my home state, it also tore through my heart and soul.  I know these places, I've been here, I've lived there...  What can I do?  The cold weather there is no joke.  (After moving to the south, it took me three winters to stop buying a snowsuit and/or snow pants for my son. lol)  I couldn't help with providing heat or electricity, and I couldn't afford to go out and buy, but I did have plenty of stash; and Unraveled had yarn that had been donated for such causes.  But who would be willing to accept handmade gifts?  Who would be willing to distribute them?  It would take at least three weeks to make enough items and the "deadline" for most organizations was only days away.

After hours of searching, I found a link, that lead to a link, that lead to a link.... (you get the picture) of a fellow member of Ravelry (and she was a New Yorker!) working directly with an organization that wanted handmade gifts to distribute to the Hurricane Sandy victims.

Using a modified version of the preemie hat pattern I designed and the Drop Stitch Cowl found on Ravelry as starting points, we (Unraveled and those who frequent The Stitcher's Corner) got busy.  Soon there were crafters dropping off items they had made and never gifted or sold.  Unraveled decided to donate it's eight blankets from the Warm Up America! project.  Word spread and sister-in-laws and friends of friends were donating.  By the time our deadline approached we had two large boxes ready to be shipped to New York.

I want to thank everyone involved in this effort.  You have done so much in so little time.  Many of you taking time from the most crucial hours dedicated to handcrafting gifts for the holidays.  I know some of my gifts didn't get made and I had to buy into the commercial thing.  But if I had it to do all over again, I would, without hesitation; however I pray that I don't.

God bless those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Until I see you again,

HAPPY CRAFTING
